What Is FUE Hair Transplant?

separator

The FUE method involves extracting individual hair follicles, known as grafts, from a donor part of the body and implanting them into thin or balding areas.

The specific number of grafts a patient receives is contingent upon the:

  • Diameter of transplant area
  • Quality, density, and overall type of hair
  • Hair color

The FUE procedure is relatively painless, as it is performed under local anesthesia; the recipient area is numbed by administering small incisions of anesthetic with a micro-needle. The surgeon then inserts the grafts at an angle and concentration to match the natural hair pattern, creating a new hairline that will eventually regrow to yield permanent results.

Advantages Of The FUE Method

separator
  • It doesn’t require stitches or incisions
  • Less bleeding
  • Quicker recovery with minimal downtime
  • No linear scar in the donor zone
  • It is possible to regrow hair on areas with scars
  • The surgeon can extract specific hair follicles

Disadvantages

separator
  • Patients who wish to transplant a lot of grafts may require further sessions.
  • The FUE hair transplant cost per graft is more costly than traditional procedures due to its comparable advantages.

Clean & Bandage

A Care4Hair professional will shave the hair in both the donor and recipient areas to allow clear access to the hair and skin and use a micro-needle to insert local anesthetic to the scalp.
The doctor removes follicles from the donor area of the skin using a surgical extraction instrument, (typically 0.6mm-1.0mm in diameter) and then makes a series of micro-incisions to the recipient area for follicles to be inserted.
Hair follicles are harvested into the thinning or bald area manually or with a NeoGraft machine. (The NeoGraft machine is an automated hair transplant system that enables surgeons to perform safe and effective hair transplants.)
The doctor and his team of professionals clean and bandage the affected area for recovery.

HOW DOES FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT WORK?

Best Candidates For FUE Hair Transplant

separator

Overall health – The ideal candidate for a FUE hair transplant is in overall good health and does not suffer from any medical condition. If you suffer from any health conditions, it is essential to inform the doctor during your consultation.

Patients over the age of 30 – Candidates should be over 30 years of age when considering the FUE method. Hair loss in patients under 30 will continue to fluctuate, making it difficult to determine how this type of hair loss will develop with age. Therefore, patients undergoing treatment at an early age may need additional sessions in the future if hair loss continues. Also, patients who have experienced hair loss for at least five years are ideal FUE hair restoration candidates.

Those Suffering from Male or Female Pattern Baldness – Those suffering from a genetic condition commonly known as male pattern baldness are excellent candidates for a FUE transplant. Since this condition only affects part of the scalp, patients have more hair follicles available for transplant. However, patients suffering from unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) are not great candidates since they do not possess sufficient donor follicles.

FUE Hair Transplant Results And Recovery

separator

Regarding the FUE hair transplant recovery time, patients should keep in mind that it is natural for the operated areas to appear slightly pinker than normal post-operation but this should last only a few days. Transplanted hair is often expected to go through a “shedding phase” and be released some weeks after the procedure due to the follicles entering a resting phase. In no way does this indicate that the FUE transplant failed to work. This shedding is the area’s natural response to the surgery; the grafts maintain their health regardless, so long as the authorized aftercare steps are taken.

Changes typically become more noticeable after 3 to 4 months when new, healthy, permanent hairs begin to grow in the recipient areas of the scalp. The majority of the new hairs will show in 5 to 6 months and hair will be thicker and longer in 10 months. Final results are expected to appear between one year to 18 months after surgery.

FUE Hair Transplant Side Effects And Risks

separator

Although the FUE technique is minimally invasive when performed by a trained and licensed professional, it still poses some potential risks and side effects that include but are not limited to:

  • Infections
  • Crust or pus drainage
  • Scalp pain
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)
  • Loss of sensation around the operated area

FUE Hair Transplant Cost

The cost of a FUE hair transplant with our distinguished doctor ranges between $2.00 to $3.50 per graft with each procedure averaging between 500 to 1000 hair grafts removed. However, the FUE cost per graft and overall FUE procedure cost can vary significantly from patient to patient.

FAQS

separator

The amount of procedures required depends on the patient’s personal goals, degree of hair loss, as well as their tolerance of the operation. While some patients may be satisfied with 500 grafts, others may require 2,000 grafts or more to restore a natural look. We will work with you to determine how many procedures it will potentially require for you to achieve your ideal results.

Our doctor at Care4Hair in Miami utilizes the FUE method on both men and women. In fact, FUE is often the technique of choice for women as their hair loss takes on a more diffuse pattern compared to men and allows targeted placement to restore volume or density more precisely throughout the head.

Our doctor does perform facial hair transplants, particularly eyebrow transplantation which has become a popular service at the Care4Hair clinic.

Follicular units are extracted from the donor zone of a patient’s body and then transplanted into their thinning or bald areas.

Patients often ask the Care4Hair team if they can obtain hair follicles from someone else and the answer is simply: no.

While it sounds theoretically possible to receive hair follicles from someone else, if a patient were to receive them, their body would automatically develop an immune response and reject the foreign tissue without immune-suppressant drugs.

The only exceptions may be:

  1. If the donor is an identical twin- Due to shared DNA and genetic makeup, the recipient’s body will not recognize the twin’s follicles and skin tissues as foreign, making rejection highly unlikely.
  2. After a bone marrow transplant- A bone marrow transplant involves the replacement of a patient’s blood and immune system. Therefore, if an individual undergoes a bone marrow transplant and then receives donor follicles from the same person, the patient’s body should not reject the grafted hair.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please inform the doctor and his team of professionals at the time of your initial consultation. With a detailed medical history, the Care4Hair team in Miami will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

The results of a FUE hair transplant surgery are long-lasting and deemed to be permanent because the harvested hair follicles are genetically programmed to keep growing. However, it remains imperative that the surgery be performed by a skilled, experienced hair restoration specialist like our doctor, who enforces post-procedure care instructions for all of his patients.

Though minor scarring is inevitable with any hair transplant operation, including the FUE procedure, a skilled and experienced surgeon like our doctor can help keep it to a minimum. FUE scars typically appear as small dots that are likely to fade over time but regardless, will be covered by regrown hair. The restored hairline is expected to yield natural results, thus remaining disguised to the outside world.

Patients between 30 and 50 are considered good candidates since hair loss begins to stabilize at this age but there is no age limit, as FUE hair transplants can be performed on a patient of any age.

The FUE hair transplant method maintains an average success rate of 90-95%, making it one of the most effective and promising options for patients facing hair loss.

While patients are expected to begin shedding hair within the first few weeks after surgery, that does not mean they lost the follicle itself; this is simply a “shedding phase” caused by the body’s natural response to the surgery.

New hair should regrow within 3 months thereafter. The hair will be very fine at first but it will eventually get thicker and fuller with time. The majority of the new hairs will show in 5 to 6 months. However, hair will be thick and long in 10 months. The final results will be seen a year to 18 months after surgery.

Our doctor and his team of professionals have served clients from Miami and around the world with care, precision, and an unparalleled ability to deliver natural-looking results. Not only is Care4Hair equipped with the latest technology in hair restoration but the doctor can recommend the best procedure for your age, hair type, and aesthetic goals while emphasizing optimal aftercare practices to boost permanent results.
